River Trail Color

This last day of October, 2008, Tanya and I took a very pleasant walk along the Sacramento River Trail.

The path--an almost level old railway right-of-way--has just been re-surfaced with a thick layer of asphalt--and has a newly painted bright yellow center-stripe to keep the bicyclists and joggers out of danger.

It is really nice.

Most of the summer it is far too hot here in Redding, California to do much walking--or anything else--outdoors in the daytime, but for the last few days--
the weather has been splendid.

The rains started yesterday though so we expect that the rainy season has begun now which will make it too wet to do very much outdoors for the next few months.

So it is.

Tomasito talk

I've been thinking about the work that is available in this little town (Redding, CA).

These are hard times all over the USA and there is a LOT of unemployment here as everywhere.

The local newspaper says it is about 6%, but I believe it is MUCH higher--easily over 10%--probably there are a lot of people like me who have done a lot of things over the years but are just disgusted with the little work there is to do.

Almost EVERYTHING is done big now.

Just about ALL work is controlled by some huge faceless corporation and what work is available might just as well be done by robots.

Their corporate policy is "teamwork", friendliness and good employee benefits, but the actual day to day is dumb, dumb, dumb--the teamwork does not exist at ANY level and the company will fire you without warning whenever they chose!

Construction? Dead. Labor? Illegals have it all.

Education? After putting in about five years of higher education doing exactly as they're told to get the credits--the prospective teacher is so brain-washed that they can see nothing wrong with the system and they are so glad to get a steady job that they will never rock the boat--in fact they don't know anything to rock the boat with or about! The propaganda is that there is always a need for more teachers--but when you go to a "hiring fair for educators" you will find thirty applicants for each job! And I am NOT kidding.

About the only slightly decent "hands on" work available is in the medical or health care biz which is actually the sickness biz. And this type of work is far from creative--in fact it is primarily the greed biz pure and simple. (Take the money away from the sick people--no matter what!)

Satanic Mask

Papier Mache Satanic Hallow e'en Mask

by Tomasito, October 2008

Now, for all you old hillbillies: this old hillbilly song:

Fire on the mountain,

Run, child, run!

The devil's in the house

Of the rising sun!”

The devil, (who doesn’t really exist anyway), is always in the "House of the Rising Sun"

And where or what is that " house"? Is it a place on this earth or a place in the mind or does that distinction really matter since everything is in the mind and only in the mind and not "out there" somewhere outside our skin.

These days it is popular to call the Christian version of the devil "666".

And She, He, It seems to be everywhere. This is not something new. Its how its always been-in this particular "House of the Rising Sun".

And it is still true: "If you play with fire, you will get burned"

I have been reading The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying by Sogyal Rinpoche again.

If you have not read it yet, look into it. I know it is not for everyone, for sure, but I think it does have some very important and timely information.

You will find it in most public libraries in California.

Papier mache serving tray

I have been experimenting with some small papier mache trays. Decorating them is fun and seeing just what it takes to make a good, solid and useful article is interesting.

The above scanned tray is 8" X 12".

This morning Tanya and I moved our exhibition of twenty papier mache masks from the Manzanita Elementary School library to the Turtle Bay Elementary School library.

Most of the students at these schools spend at least one period a week in the library and so they will see these hand-made, one-of-a-kind creations.

Perhaps this experience will show them that costumes and so forth can be hand-made and need not be ready-made merchandise manufactured in China--as so much is nowadays.

Redding CA Library Installation

Yesterday Tanya and I installed our Dia de los Muertos papier mache artwork altar in the front lobby of the main Shasta County Public Library.

This is a very good venue for a "new" artist like me to begin showing my work.
It is free (for me and the viewers) and the public at large is welcome.

The Redding Main Library (which
is the Shasta County Library as mentioned) is a large new facility and is well attended by most literate Redding residents. The "outreach" staff has been very helpful and enthusiastic for this installation and our previous mask exhibition. (Thanks, Meagan!)

The entire exhibition is created of papier mache--even the cerveza bottle and the frijoles can!

The Dia de los Muertos installation will run until November 2, 2008.

The masks pictured above were designed especially for seasonal dances.

It remains to be seen if they will be used for this purpose.
