I would like to start a small class of very young students--elementary age children--ages from about 9 years to 14 years--to work with a wide variety of art media. Six to eight young people would be enough--more would be too many,

This group would be called:

"The Young Artist's Studio".

The students would receive individual instruction from myself and, though meeting as a group, would be considered independent and unique artists.

My new contacts at Manzanita School in Redding CA may be helpful in this.

Traditional treatment of Guadalupe on a dollar store hankie.

"The Virgin of Guadalupe"--the very famous mythic creation of Mexican belief --is the Patroness of all the Americas. Some pictorial tribute to her is an almost required feature of Day of the Dead celebratory altars.

Tanya and I are preparing a Dia de los Muertos exhibit as an installation in the lobby glass case at the Public Library in Redding, CA.

The Dia de los Muertos (November 2) follows Dia de Todos Santos and is an important celebration in Mexico and much of the United States.

Our installation will be as colorful as possible--fun and even funny--but also thought provoking and respectful toward the dead.

And a good Memento Mori for all the people of Redding, CA.

Black Elk Mask

I made this mask--based on the features of elder Black Elk, an American Indian (Oglala Sioux) Spiritual Leader of an earlier generation--painted red because that is how he saw himself at some of the significant times in his life.

I recommend the book Black Elk Speaks by John Neihardt if you have not yet read it.

Day of the Dead Exhibition

Another of my Day of the Dead papier mache masks.

Tanya and I will prepare a Dia de los Muertos exhibit for the front lobby exhibition case at the almost new Redding CA Public Library--starting on October 13 and ending on November 3, 2008.

We are very much looking forward to this (free) commission--especially since I now spend most of my time--& all of my work time, as it were--in our apartment kitchen making papier mache masks and art.

The US/California economy is such a wreck right now that any work which a person can do is good!

I have been a working professional artist in Switzerland and Germany and Italy--but this is my first time to be an artist in my very own home country!

And Good luck to all artists everywhere!!
